A saffron latte is warm, spiced milk built around real saffron — closer to a "golden milk" wellness drink than a coffee-shop latte, though it works either way if you add a shot of espresso.
Why You'll Want This on Repeat
- 10 Minutes, One Pan: No special equipment beyond a milk frother, and even that's optional.
- Works Two Ways: Skip the espresso for a caffeine-free evening drink, or add it for a saffron-spiced coffee.
- Real Saffron, Not Syrup: No artificial "saffron flavouring" — the colour and aroma come from actual strands.
Ingredients
Serves 1
- 1.5 cups milk (dairy or plant-based)
- A pinch of Kashmiri saffron strands
- 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric (optional, for colour)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/2 teaspoon honey, or to taste
- 1 shot espresso or 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee (optional, for a coffee version)
Instructions
- Bloom the saffron: Warm 2 tablespoons of the milk and soak the saffron strands in it for 5-10 minutes.
- Heat the milk: Heat the remaining milk with the cardamom (and turmeric, if using) over medium-low heat, whisking gently.
- Combine: Stir in the saffron milk and honey.
- Froth: Froth the milk with a frother, whisk, or by shaking it in a sealed jar until foamy.
- Serve: Pour into a mug and garnish with a pinch of saffron and a dusting of cardamom.
- Optional coffee version: Add a shot of espresso to the mug before pouring in the milk.
Tip: A pinch really is enough — over-steeping saffron in milk can turn slightly bitter. Five to ten minutes is the sweet spot.
