How to Consume Kashmiri Saffron

History of Kashmiri Saffron

As per historical records, saffron made its entry into the region around 500 BC through Persian rulers. Upon their conquest of Kashmir, the Persian Saffron crocus corms were planted in the soil, and this cultivation has persisted to the present day. Despite this legend, locals dispute the claim, attributing the presence of saffron in the region to the holy intervention of two Sufi Saints, Khawja Masood wali (r.a) and Sheikh Sharif-ud-din wali (may his soul rest in peace), in the 11th and 12th centuries A.D.

These saints, who fell ill and were cured by a local chieftain, expressed their gratitude by gifting a saffron crocus bulb. To honor their favor, prayers are still offered during the saffron season at the golden-domed shrine dedicated to the two saints.

Cultivation of Pure & Organic Kashmiri Saffron

The pure and authentic Kashmiri Saffron is harvested from the blossoms of Crocus sativus (Iridaceae), commonly known as saffron crocus or saffron bulbs. These bulbs, called corms, are planted on untouched land, with each new bulb giving rise to the multiplication of the plant. The dark purple flowers, known as saffron flowers, appear in autumn. By mid-October, the saffron flowers begin to bloom, lasting for about three weeks.

There is a specific period of heightened blooming known as the “blanket days,” lasting from two to six days, during which saffron flowers transform into dark purple beauties with stigmas and threads later processed into pure and authentic Kashmiri Saffron strands. Thousands of fully grown saffron flowers are harvested in the morning and brought to the stripping area. After careful manual removal of the stigmas or threads, they are sun-dried for two to three days to eliminate moisture, resulting in the production of pure and organic Kashmiri Saffron ready for sorting.

Variants of Pure and Organic Kashmiri Saffron

Four variants of pure and organic Kashmiri Saffron exist. The first is lacha, the full strand found inside the saffron/kesar flower with a red top and yellow button, handpicked by underprivileged farmers. Mongra saffron, the second variant, is a deep crimson-red colored stigma enriched with essential nutrients, known for being the purest and most expensive form. Broken saffron, the third variant, consists of small pieces of the mongra strand. The fourth variant, Zarda Saffron, is the tail of the red filament found at the bottom of saffron lacha.

Buy Kashmiri Saffron proudly houses the world’s best quality, organic, authentic Kashmiri saffron/kesar online. Their expert team visits the lush fields of Kashmiri Saffron in Pampore, the Saffron town, packs them hygienically at their warehouse, and delivers them worldwide, offering the best natural, organic, and authentic flavoring and coloring agent directly from the source.

Why is pure and organic Kashmiri Saffron expensive?

The high price of pure and organic Kashmiri Saffron is attributed to its rarity and its role as a natural coloring and flavoring agent. With only three strands in each small Kashmiri Saffron flower, approximately 75,000 flowers need to be hand-plucked to collect one pound of the spice. The labor-intensive process of cultivating saffron flowers on the unique Karewa soil of Kashmir, coupled with its exclusive properties and uses, contributes to its nickname “red-gold” and justifies its expensive nature.

Benefits of unadulterated and organic Kashmiri Saffron/Kashmiri Kesar

Pure and organic Kashmiri Saffron is known to uplift mood and alleviate depression, reduce PMS symptoms, and enhance learning and memory retention. A topical application of pure and organic Kashmiri Saffron may assist in reducing acne, dark spots, and blemishes.
